The sophistication of pre-"contact" American Indian / Native American cultures is much discussed. One interesting point brought to my attention by my readings during 25 years of working for American Indian organizations, was that Indian people DID invent the wheel. Toys have been found with wheels on them, in archaeological explorations. Without the draft animals (cattle or horses) to pull wheeled carts, the application did not occur...
But the invention was there.
